Unit information
Accounting information systems play a significant role in modern businesses by connecting data, technology and people to support effective decision-making and control.
In this unit, you develop an advanced and integrated understanding of accounting systems and analytics, and you apply that understanding to solving business problems. You explore key theories and practices underpinning contemporary accounting information systems, including the software and digital processes used by accounting professionals to manage transactions, information flows and controls. You also examine the emerging role of accountants in driving innovation in systems and controls within organisations.
Drawing on practitioner resources and academic literature, you investigate, analyse and reflect critically on how accounting systems and analytics apply in different business contexts. Throughout the unit, you work independently to plan and execute tasks that build your professional capability in evaluating accounting information system functions for decision-making.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the motivations and characteristics of accounting information systems and apply this understanding to solving problems faced by businesses;
- use a range of cognitive and communication skills to review, analyse and reflect critically on the applicability of accounting information systems theories and practices to business;
- work independently to plan and execute tasks to enhance professional knowledge and skills; and
- engage with a range of data sources, practitioner resources and academic literature relevant to the field of accounting information systems.
