Unit information
Enhance your skills and knowledge in relation to interacting with, assessing and providing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people suffering from mental health problems and disorders.
Studying this unit, you will gain an introduction to the major mental health issues currently facing Indigenous people. Consideration is given to the impact of the unique historical, cultural and social situation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the main types of mental health disorders and problems experienced.
Emphasising your development of knowledge and understanding of culturally appropriate intervention strategies, this unit will add to your professional skillset, equipping you to provide mental health assistance in both clinical and community settings.

You must enrol in this unit by the Monday before the Trimester starts. If there are insufficient student numbers this unit will not run and you will be withdrawn from the unit and offered an appropriate alternate unit by the course coordinator.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate advanced understanding of Indigenous cultures and communities;
- articulate the meaning and significance of the holistic view of health, espoused by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, in relation to mental health;
- critically assess the prevalence of mental health disorders and problems in Indigenous communities today; and
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of the use of culturally appropriate intervention strategies in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
