Unit information
This unit provides you with a thorough introduction to the major processes of transformation of contemporary international relations and world politics.
The aim throughout is to focus on events and trends since the end of the Cold War and the dramatic shifts in the emerging framework of 21st century world politics. It also introduces you to principal international relations theories to develop your skills in interpreting contemporary world order.
Not only will you gain an understanding of the key trends in contemporary international relations, you will also explore important concepts such as the state, sovereignty and globalisation in theory and practice, as well as political and normative implications of international relations.
In doing so, you will develop your theoretical knowledge and research skills, and think critically about major developments in modern international relations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced body of knowledge of: key trends in contemporary international relations; important concepts such as the state, sovereignty and globalisation in theory and practice; and political and normative implications of international relations;
- critically assess and apply principal theoretical perspectives in the discipline of international relations;
- present a coherent and sustained scholarly argument demonstrating an advanced knowledge of research methods and principles; and
- rigorously evaluate, critically analyse and synthesise evidence from a range of primary and secondary sources.
