Unit information
This unit provides you with an advanced examination of ancient military history and warfare. You will thematically examine ancient warfare by looking at the use of infantry, cavalry, siege equipment and the navies of a variety of cultures, in particular Greece and Rome. A particular focus is given to the developments in tactics, technology and socio-military influences between c.500 BC and AD 400. This unit also provides opportunities to develop your critical thinking, research and communication skills.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an expert understanding of a range of significant issues in warfare in western antiquity from circa 500 BC to AD 400;
- exhibit an advanced understanding of knowledge of human behaviour in an historically different context;
- apply a sophisticated understanding of the ways in which state, society and armed forces influenced each other;
- demonstrate an expert ability to produce clear written communication (including the selection and use of evidence) and present a coherent and sustained logical argument;
- with initiative and expert judgement, apply advanced research skills in the field of ancient military history; and
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of, and expertise, in historical methodology.
