Unit information
Vegetation management plays a vital role in addressing some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges, including accelerated climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.
Building on your knowledge of vegetation ecology, this unit explores contemporary approaches to vegetation assessment and management across a variety of contexts such as private land stewardship, carbon sequestration, bushfire management, and development projects.
You’ll examine current state and federal government policies relating to vegetation assessment methods, along with emerging methods being developed for carbon, biodiversity, and nature repair markets. The unit also introduces practical tools and resources to support vegetation assessment and management, including grant writing, and stakeholder analysis and engagement.
The skills you develop in this unit are directly applicable to conservation, renewable energy projects, mining, agriculture, and broader land development initiatives.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- evaluate vegetation assessment and monitoring protocols for a range of purposes, using appropriate equipment and established methods, as dictated by relevant legislation;
- apply practical knowledge of tools and methods commonly used in a variety of vegetation assessment and monitoring scenarios, and use this knowledge to critically assess existing and proposed conservation and development projects;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of how ecological knowledge can be used to manage vegetation in an ecologically sustainable manner and develop vegetation management recommendations in a range of contexts, for a variety of outcomes;
- demonstrate the ability to interpret and transfer complex ecological knowledge and management recommendations to specialist and non-specialist audiences via verbal or written formats; and
- demonstrate the ability to critically assess and analyse information relating to project design and execution.
