Unit information
Sustainability and the environment are important issues for the next generation of scientists, ethicists and people in general. Human behaviour, and our ethical positions, impact greatly on the decisions that need to be made for and by the community, as the earth’s environment changes.
In this unit you will assert your ethical values and moral principles into this conversation about science and the environment.
This unit is concerned with the ethical challenges presented by environmentalism. It pays special attention to the animal rights movement, to debates about ‘human chauvinism’ and to questions about what we owe to future generations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- exhibit an advanced, integrated, historically informed and in-depth theoretical grasp of the core concepts of environmental ethics;
- acquire and deploy strategies for reflective and self-critical learning and autonomous research in creative problem-solving at an expert level in an environment of diverse contexts, competing paradigms, and deep convictions; and
- exercise expert judgement, adaptability and personal responsibility in their assessment tasks.
