Teaching Pronunciation (EDLA489)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of pronunciation concepts by evaluating contemporary approaches to teaching pronunciation with reference to relevant theories (GTSD 2.1.1);
2. demonstrate specialised knowledge and theoretical understanding of the sound systems of the target language (GTSD 2.1.1);
3. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn the pronunciation of the target language and implications for its teaching by analysing the pronunciation of language learners in order to identify learning needs (GTSD 1.2.1);
4. apply theoretical and professional knowledge of pronunciation systems and learning to the design of effective pronunciation lesson sequences by setting challenging but achievable learning goals, selecting and organising content and resources, teaching strategies and well-designed classroom activities, and by providing clear directions and timely and appropriate feedback (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 4.2.1, 5.2.1); and
5. demonstrate understanding of pronunciation assessment strategies (informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative), and knowledge of strategies to evaluate pronunciation teaching programs and improve student pronunciation learning (GTSD 3.6.1, 5.1.1).
