Unit information
Gain knowledge for teaching Primary School Health and Physical Education (HPE), with the first of two core HPE pedagogy units.
Develop an in-depth understanding of the knowledge, understanding, skills, values and methodologies you will need to safely and effectively teach the content of the current State and/or National HPE curriculum to primary school-aged children.
You will examine strategies for meeting the needs of students across the full range of abilities, so that all children can achieve the intended learning outcomes.
You will also have opportunities to explore current research into the way students learn movement skills and apply your knowledge to organise curriculum content into effective learning and design teaching sequences.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of the primary school-aged child relevant to school-based Physical Education, as well as strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across a range of abilities (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 3.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn movement skills and implications of this research for teaching practice (GTSD 1.2.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance, structure, content and teaching strategies pertaining to the delivery of the Physical Education component of primary school curriculum (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1); and
- apply knowledge of curriculum, assessment, reporting, student learning, teaching as well as instruction (e.g., organise classroom activities and provide clear instruction) to organise curriculum content into effective learning and teaching sequences (e.g., lesson plans) (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.2.1, 3.5.1, 3.6.1, 4.2.1, 5.1.1).
