Unit information
Young people’s attitudes towards health are formed from an early age. Studying this unit, you will be introduced to the principles and practices of teaching the Health Education component of the primary school curriculum.
You will focus on emphasising the factors that support health and well-being through the ‘salutogenic’ model for health education.
Specific health studies, including healthy eating, sexual health, drug education, child protection education, interpersonal relationships and healthy choices, are explored.
You will also have opportunities to apply your knowledge to classroom strategies and teaching and learning sequences and examine how health promoting behaviour is established with pedagogies and practices informed by the Health Promoting School framework.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the central concepts, structure and contents of the Health component of the Australian HPE Curriculum and NSW PDHPE Key Learning Area (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1. 4.4.1);
- use curriculum knowledge to organise syllabus content into an effective learning and teaching sequence in the form of a School Health Education Plan (scope and sequence) (GTSD 2.2.1);
- use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design Health Education lesson sequences and lesson plans (GTSD 2.3.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1); and
- demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities which include a range of teaching strategies and provide clear instructions to students (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.5.1, 4.2.1).
