Unit information
Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect involves a range of highly specialised skills and requires teachers to be culturally sensitive and aware when engaging their students in learning activities. For students who are learning to speak English as an Additional Language or Dialect, having an effective and engaging teacher is critical to their success.
This is the second of two units to prepare you to become a highly effective teacher of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). In this unit you will examine specific knowledge about the English language, including contexts of English language use, text structure and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and punctuation.
You will learn how to teach explicit knowledge about language in the EAL/D classroom; learning and teaching language skills (listening, speaking, reading/viewing, writing/composing); and EAL/D program planning, design and evaluation.

Students not required to complete a professional experience placement for employment or career advancement should contact the Course Coordinator for advice on alternative units for EDLA488. Please note that ELDA488 can only be swapped for another in degrees where EDLA488 does not form a Core or Prescribed Unit in the Program of Study.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the English language, including knowledge of the context of language use and language variation, text structure and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and punctuation;
- discuss and demonstrate the role of teaching explicit knowledge about language in the EAL/D classroom;
- demonstrate professional knowledge and understanding of the components of an EAL/D program planning, design and evaluation, including analysis of situation/needs, task design, assessment and evaluation; and
- design and deliver effective lessons and teaching sequences for EAL/D students to build knowledge and skills in each of the macroskills.
