Unit information
Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect involves a range of highly specialised skills and requires teachers to be culturally sensitive and aware when engaging their students in learning activities. For students who are learning to speak English as an Additional Language or Dialect, effective and engaging teaching is critical to their success.
This unit is the first of a pair of units designed to prepare you to become a teacher of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D). You will learn about the principles that underpin effective learning and teaching of EAL/D, and the related approaches and pedagogies. The unit will teach you how to create a positive learning environment and how to plan effective learning sequences and programs with accurate assessment and evaluation processes.
In this unit you will examine the experience of the language learner, with special attention given to the relationship between language and culture.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate professional knowledge of the experience of the language learner, and the relation between language and culture (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1);
- demonstrate critical understanding of principles that underpin effective learning and teaching of English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) and related approaches and pedagogies (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 4.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of methods for creating an English language learning environment, planning lessons and programming teaching sequences (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.5.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 3.5.1); and
- demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of assessment and evaluation processes applicable to EAL/D (GTSD 2.3.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1).
