Unit information
This unit examines how young children develop language and communication from birth through the early years, and how educators can support this development in diverse contexts. You will explore key theories of language learning, the distinction between receptive and expressive language, and the role of caregivers in fostering listening and speaking skills.
You will also investigate plurilingual pedagogies and dialogic reading strategies, with a focus on supporting language learning in all children, including those who are learning English as an additional language or dialect.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain key theories of language learning and their application to practice with children aged from birth to five years (CS: 1.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.4, 3.7, 4.2, 5.2);
- describe evidence of emerging language and communication skills from infancy through the early years using effective communication skills (CS: 1.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.4, 3.7, 4.1, 4.2, 5.2);
- reflect on plurilingual pedagogies within workplace contexts (CS: 1.2, 1.6, 2.4, 2.6, 4.4, 4.5); and
- advocate for and enact dialogic reading strategies with children aged from birth to five years (CS: 1.2, 1.6, 2.4, 2.6, 4.4, 4.5).
