Unit information
Health and physical education classes encourage students to explore health, safety and wellbeing while developing skills and confidence through movement experiences.
In this unit, you will gain a broad foundation in the field of Health and Physical Education through a sociocultural and critical lens.
Critique and deconstruct practices and perspectives that are taken for granted in our current discourse of health and physicality, and explore temporal and social contexts impacting human movement, perceptions of healthy and unhealthy, fit and unfit bodies.
You will gain insights into the influence of multiculturalism, violence, deviance, sexuality, gender and social class in sport, reflecting on how previous experiences shape professional practices and personal viewpoints.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad knowledge of the sociocultural factors that influence the field of Health and Physical Education;
- identify and express sensitive self-awareness of how previous experiences shape professional practices;
- critically analyse dominant practices and discourses related to the field of Health and Physical Education; and
- develop skills to deconstruct taken-for-granted practices and perspectives.
