Unit information
Extend your research and analytical thinking skills and contribute to original research addressing complex social problems, by pursuing the honours stream of the Bachelor of Social Work.
Taken in the first half of your honours program, this unit extends your discipline knowledge and builds your understanding of research methods to prepare you for the specific research project undertaken in the second part of your honours (HSSW402H).
Guided by experienced supervisors, you will have the opportunity to examine cutting-edge research literature relevant to your research interests and complete a critical literature review.
You will design, plan and initiate your social work honours research project, developing writing skills to translate complex knowledge and ideas to different audiences.
Your understanding of the ethical issues at the forefront of social work research will also be enhanced, as you prepare an application for approval of your project from the UNE Human Research Ethics Committee.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically analyse and evaluate research literature;
- demonstrate writing skills necessary for Bachelor Honours research to transfer complex knowledge and ideas;
- design, plan and initiate an appropriate social work research project for Honours level research; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the ethical issues inherent in research in the fields of social work research through the completion of ethics paperwork for the UNE Human Research Ethics committee.
