Unit information
Social psychology is the scientific investigation of how social contexts shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. In this unit, your introductory psychology knowledge will be extended as you explore the theories that underpin the field of social psychology, informed by an evidence-based approach.
Studying this unit, you will explore a range of current topics in social psychology including social cognition, social perception, the self, justification, conformity, attitudes and attitude change, group behaviour, prejudice, and cultural competence. You will also learn how social psychology can be applied to real-world problems.
Assessments encourage you to hone your critical evaluation and communication skills, with an assignment that allows you to put these skills to the test by reading and interpreting published research papers in psychology.

GradDipPsych students: It is a requirement that students who wish to enrol in PSYC200 in Trimester 1 in order to complete their degree program in three trimesters, complete PSYC101 and PSYC102 in Trimester 3 of the preceding year.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical and technical knowledge in the topic area of social psychology;
- analyse and critique theory and research in the discipline of social psychology;
- independently read and evaluate scientific articles in social psychology, thus demonstrating self-directed pursuit of scholarly inquiry in psychology;
- transmit knowledge of social psychology in written form using the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style;
- demonstrate understanding of cultural influences on behaviour and appropriate cultural responsiveness; and
- develop understanding of teams and their effective operation and demonstrate teamwork skills.
