Unit information
Examine current trends in mathematics education with this online unit. You will investigate the implication of current research of different learning theories on the enhancement of mathematics education.
This unit provides you with the opportunity to hone your critical and analytical thinking skills as you undertake a literature review.
You will source materials from multiple avenues to gain in-depth knowledge of the teaching and learning of a specific topic in senior secondary mathematics education (Stage 6), as you develop your research skills.
With reference to the literature review, you will also explore the integration of relevant learning theories for a unit of work into practice, highlighting the design of appropriate mathematics instructions and assessment tasks.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- appreciate the implication of current research of various learning theories (e.g., cognitive load theory) upon the enhancement of mathematics education (GTSD 1.2.1);
- use research skills to gather materials from multiple sources to prepare a literature review regarding the teaching and learning of a topic (GTSD 2.1.1);
- design appropriate mathematics instructions for a unit of work supported by relevant learning theories (GTSD 2.3.1, 3.6.1); and
- include a range of teaching strategies in teaching (GTSD 3.3.1)
