Secondary Music Pedagogy Y7-10 (EDAE395)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate the knowledge base underpinning the principles and practices of Years 7–10 music teaching, including how students learn music in classrooms, how to motivate them for classroom music activities, and understanding the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds and different abilities (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1);
2. demonstrate understanding of the curriculum requirements of the NSW Music 7–10 Syllabus and the Years 7-10 music teaching content for performance (singing, playing instruments), listening, and composing, which comprise key concepts and structure, designing content using curriculum and assessment, and strategies for using ICT (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.3.1, 2.4.1 2.6.1);
3. demonstrate effective pedagogical approaches for Years 7-10 music teaching by developing achievable goals, appropriate lesson sequences, and a range of teaching strategies and resources (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1);
4. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for creating a safe and supportive classroom environment for Years 7-10 music by incorporating musical activities that all students can do, providing clear directions for classroom activities, managing challenging behaviours, and requiring ethical use of ICT (GTSD 4.1.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1, 4.5.1); and
5. demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies for using informal and formal assessments and conducting consistent and comparable judgements of Years 7-10 students’ music learning (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.3.1).
