Secondary English: Specialist Literature Studies (EDEE333)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate their ability to critique curriculum materials for Years 7–10 English and Stage 6 English Syllabuses in terms of a developed theory of education and a sound practical working knowledge of classroom teaching (GTSD 2.1.1);
2. demonstrate their ability to critically evaluate research in the field of English education and contribute to its professional journals (GTSD 1.2.1);
3. demonstrate their ability to engage with different approaches to the study of literary and non-literary texts, including film, media, Australian literature and texts that give insight into Aboriginal and multicultural experiences as well as literature from other countries (GTSD 2.4.1);
4. demonstrate the relationship between English and literacy in the broader school curriculum and a range of strategies for teaching and assessing secondary English (GTSD 2.3.1, 2.5.1, 5.1.1);
5. implement a broad cross-section of practical skills, including the use of ICT appropriate for designing lessons and lesson sequences that provide achievable challenges and to support student engagement (GTSD 2.3.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 3.5.1); and
6. plan and incorporate a range of assessment strategies into classwork and programs consistent with School Achievement and Higher School Certificate requirements, linking outcomes, learning activities and assessment, to provide assessment data to inform student learning and report as required (GTSD 5.1.1).
