Unit information
Studying this unit, you will consider the underlying issues in the ethical conduct of research with humans and animals, and prepare an application for ethical approval for a research project. It is designed to increase your ability to conduct competent and responsible research in neuroscience.
The unit also covers considerations on the design and conduct of research. You will extend your practical skills with training in the data-analysis skills necessary to understand your research findings and learn how to report results to a scientific audience.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- exhibit an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge regarding ethical, data-collection and data-analytic issues underlying research in Neuroscience;
- exhibit the ability to critically analyse, reflect on and synthesise complex information regarding ethics issues and to independently prepare an appropriate ethics application for research;
- plan and undertake the specialised technical skills required for laboratory- and field-based data collection;
- undertake and interpret data-analytic methodologies and transmit the knowledge and ideas arising from that process to a specialist and non-specialist audience; and
- apply the knowledge and skills listed above to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, adaptability and responsibility when planning research in neuroscience as a practitioner of research.
