Explore evidence-based approaches to treating the most common adult mental health problems and gain the skills you need to effectively support people in clinical settings.
Studying this unit, you will be introduced to psychological interventions employed in the most common adult mental health problems, exploring the range of theoretical and applied features of the major schools of psychotherapy.
You will focus on evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behaviour therapy, including a variety of specific clinical skills. You will also examine the empirical literature related to treating adult mental health disorders.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the major schools of psychotherapy and the theoretical and applied differences between them, with the ability to communicate this effectively to others;
- analyse and evaluate empirically validated treatments of major psychological disorders;
- demonstrate skills in the delivery of evidenced-based psychologcial interventions to a variety of clients in culturally responsive ways for the treatment of major psychological disorders and problems;
- use autonomy and judgement in evaluating and selecting specific psychological interventions and clinical skills in the treatment of psychological problems widely available across disorders; and
- apply skills in case conceptualisation and articulate a treatment strategy based on this analysis, that contribute to life-long application in a professional career.
