In this unit, you will consolidate your knowledge of comprehensive care, emphasising cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Your knowledge and skills in safe medication administration will be expanded to include intravenous medications, IV fluids, blood and blood products.

During 80 hours of professional experience placement (PEP), you will apply your knowledge, skills, and clinical reasoning in a practical setting, engaging in highly valuable reflective practice. You will focus on concepts of comprehensive care underpinned by key ethical and legal principles for person-centred, evidence-based care.

This unit also explores intraprofessional and interprofessional communication, digital health, health promotion strategies, and diverse healthcare contexts.

Notes

This unit includes 80 hours of professional education practice.

Professional education practice will only be arranged for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.

The UNE Sydney offering of HSNS494 is only available to International students admitted to UNE Sydney on campus full-time.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. develop skills to assess and analyse cardiovascular and respiratory system health conditions, and interpret health information to plan and implement safe person-centred nursing care across the life span;
  2. implement and evaluate evidence-based clinical reasoning and the application of the NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice during professional education practice (PEP) to develop and consolidate skills in nursing practice, including recognising and responding to patient deterioration across diverse health contexts;
  3. implement, and evaluate principles of reflective practice, effective communication, and ethical and legal practice within a team approach to person-centred care;
  4. appraise and implement the principles of medication safety to administer intravenous medication and fluids, blood and blood products demonstrating patient assessment, documentation and reporting requirements utilising digital technologies; and
  5. evaluate and integrate person-centred preventative and health promotion strategies for cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.
