Unit information
This unit considers the nature of science from a philosophical perspective, with a particular focus on the problem of scientific method. As a philosopher, you will explore a range of ideas about the reliability of scientific theories and the ultimate purpose of science.
You will discuss questions such as: How does science produce knowledge? Is there a universal scientific method? How can we demarcate science from non-science? How does science change and develop over time? How do scientists choose one theory over another? Is scientific knowledge objective or only relative? What are scientific revolutions and how do they occur? Does science make progress?

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced body of knowledge of, and evaluate, some of the philosophers' arguments about science;
- apply an advanced understanding of the philosophers' arguments about scientific method when developing and carrying out their own independent research projects in various areas of science, and present coherent and sustained arguments at an advanced level; and
- apply skills of critical analysis to the exploration of some of the more advanced issues in philosophy of science and related areas of philosophy.
