Unit information
This is a capstone unit for the Bachelor of Animal Science.
In this unit you will study ruminant and monogastric animals. You will consider the major constraints to sustainable animal management posed by the environment (nutrition, climate, health and welfare) and society (ethics and external impacts) in an integrated way.
Emphasis will be placed on problem solving in complex systems, considering the interactions between factors and includes contemporary social imperatives such as environmental impact and social expectations.
You are expected to bring your accumulated knowledge of animal science to investigate and propose solutions to problems in animal science.
The unit provides you with sufficient scientific information about the major factors that limit animal systems to enable you to make recommendations on animal science problems in widely different practical situations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and deep knowledge of animal science and its environmental and social constraints, and integrate knowledge of multiple animal science disciplines and the interactions between these constraints to provide informed solutions to complex problems in animal science;
- demonstrate a coherent understanding of animal science by articulating its role and methods and explaining how issues and knowledge in animal science are contestable and testable by creative inquiry;
- critically analyse and solve complex problems in animal science by gathering, synthesising and critically evaluating information from a range of sources, designing and conducting investigations;
- exercise strategic thinking and judgement in planning and presenting a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas;
- select and apply practical and/or theoretical techniques or tools in order to conduct an investigation, collecting, accurately recording, interpreting and drawing conclusions from data, and proposing and critically analysing a range of solutions;
- effectively synthesise and communicate animal science results, information or arguments, using a range of modes for a variety of purposes and audiences; and
- prepare and present a reflective learning portfolio of the development of their skills and knowledge capacity through their practical and educational experiences.
