Unit information
Number theory is one of the most enjoyable subjects in mathematics and many people find that they develop a deeper understanding of mathematics through studying number theory.
Studying this unit, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of number theory, emphasising the importance of proof in mathematics.
You will explore topics including prime numbers and factorisation of integers, congruences, application to public key cryptography, primitive roots, primality tests, quadratic residues and reciprocity. You will also examine some nonlinear Diophantine equations.
Number theory has a long history and many of the famous mathematicians of the past have their names attached to theorems in number theory. In the rapidly changing world of modern science and technology, it increasingly has many important applications, particularly for computer science.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the rigorous concept of integers, including the fundamental theorem of number theory;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of, and apply the concept of, congruences; this will also demonstrate the ability to analyse, generate and transmit solutions to sometimes complex problems;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the principle of RSA cryptography; and
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the concept of quadratic residues.
