Unit information
In this advanced unit, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of anxiety disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder through an integrated examination of risk factors, behavioural phenotypes, neurobiology, and evidence-based treatments.
You will engage critically with neuroimaging research to interpret the neurobiological underpinnings of these conditions, evaluating how structural and functional brain changes are associated with their clinical presentation.
Through rigorous analysis of current literature, you will apply critical thinking skills to synthesise evidence across diagnostic systems and treatment modalities, developing the capacity to interpret complex neuroimaging findings and assess their implications for understanding anxiety and trauma-related psychopathology.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- exhibit an advanced broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of neuroscience with depth in the concepts and ideas underlying anxiety disorders;
- apply critical thinking and analytic skills to the evaluation of information regarding the clinical and behavioural phenotypes of anxiety disorders;
- demonstrate an understanding of the available pharmacological and behavioural interventions with the ability to transmit this knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- demonstrate extensive and well-developed cognitive and technical skills to review research and clinical literature regarding anxiety disorders;
- demonstrate an understanding of the different neuroimaging techniques like EEG and fMRI to address the need of biomarker to diagnose anxiety disorders; and
- demonstrate self-directed learning in the fields of anxiety disorders.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.

| Oral Examination based on live lecture - Assurance Task | Yes | 30% | All offerings | Students will watch a recorded research lecture via zoom and then answer five questions, posed by the unit coordinator, that relate to issues and content raised in the lecture. To pass this unit, students will achieve at least 50% in this assessment, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
| Final Examination - Assurance Task | Yes | 35% | All offerings | End-of-trimester online invigilated exam that focuses on the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, neurobiological pathways, and treatment approaches for OCD, PTSD, GAD and other anxiety disorders. To pass this unit, students will achieve at least 50% in this assessment, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit.No. Words: 2000 There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled.
