Unit information
Harmony is an important element of musical structure in many styles. Whether you play for personal enjoyment or you are on the path to a musical career as a teacher, performer, manager, or writer, a deeper understanding of harmonic structures will be of great use.
You will further develop diatonic harmony and analysis skills including more complex aspects of harmony and chordal structure (tonic, pre-dominant and dominant chords), tonicisation and modulation, sequences, musical form and advanced textures.
Your musicianship will be enhanced as you focus on written work and analysis through theoretical examples and problems.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- formulate detailed written responses to advanced diatonic chords and chord progressions in examples;
- critically analyse and evaluate different musical forms from musical score analysis;
- identify and notate advanced rhythms, melodies and harmonic progressions;
- identify and analyse secondary chords and standard modulations; and
- analyse and understand complex examples of chromatic harmony.
