Unit information
With applications ranging from electrical circuitry and computer programming to cryptography, traffic flow and economics, linear algebra studies linear transformations between vector spaces.
This unit offers you an introduction to linear algebra using familiar examples, and explores earlier results, like the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, in a new light.
Building on your understanding of algebra, differential equations and multivariable calculus, you will explore systems of linear equations, matrices and algebraic operations on them, and inner products.
Linear algebra is a basic tool for the study of pure and applied mathematics and its applications in various applied sciences. With a solid foundation in the core principles of the discipline, you will be well-equipped for further study of algebra, functional analysis, classical and quantum mechanics, differential geometry and statistics.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply an advanced understanding of linear algebra to unify material in elementary algebra, differential equations and multivariate calculus;
- apply both theoretical understanding and computational methods to advanced problems in algebra, statistics, functional analysis, complex variables, differential geometry, signal processing, harmonic analysis, physics; and
- apply advanced techniques in modern mathematics.
