Unit information
Introducing you to the concept of One Health, this unit explores the transdisciplinary, collaborative approach that recognises that improved health outcomes for people are deeply interconnected to the health of animals, plants and the environment.
You will gain an overview of the sociocultural, behavioural, biological and environmental issues related to public health that contribute to health outcomes. You will also explore the characteristics of zoonotic diseases that are naturally transmissible from animals to humans, and impact people, animals, plants and environmental health.
Explore key methods for analysing One Health problems arising from the relationships between humans, animals, plants, agriculture, and environments; and develop a better understanding of global environmental change and the impact of climate change on health outcomes.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- define One Health and analyse recent trends in public health (One Health) theory and practice to understand patterns and causes of diseases;
- critically review the interconnection between humans, animals, plants, and environmental health;
- investigate disease transmission risk within humans, animals and environments;
- demonstrate an understanding of social, cultural, behavioural, and environmental issues related to public health that influence population health outcomes;
- critically analyse One Health problems and the adaptation of transdisciplinary collaborations; and
- identify and critically evaluate current public health challenges in Australia and internationally.
