Human anatomy is the study of the human body’s structure and how this contributes to its function.
This unit provides you with an introduction to the study of human anatomy, which is essential background knowledge for further study in many areas related to human health.
Through theoretical and practical examples, you will explore a range of the topics including the terminology used to describe the human body, skeletal and musculoskeletal tissues, and the nervous system. This unit has a focus on musculoskeletal anatomy.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- acquire common terminology used for describing human anatomy and appropriately apply this to a range of contexts;
- identify the components of, and analyse the organisation of, the neural, muscular, and skeletal systems;
- locate major components of the neural, muscular, and skeletal systems on cadaveric specimens, anatomical models, diagrams or photographs (print or electronic media) and evaluate the utility of these techniques in anatomy; and
- demonstrate an understanding of how the structural organisation of biological tissues influences function with a particular emphasis on the musculoskeletal system.
