Unit information
Understanding ancient language is both complex and fascinating and requires the ability to apply reading skills to complex, unpredictable and extended texts, as well as provide solutions to sophisticated questions. In this unit, depending on which strand you undertake (Greek or Latin) you will be immersed in original texts to build your understanding at a linguistic level, as well exploring their literary/historical significance. The texts set may vary from year to year.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply reading skills to complex, unpredictable and extended Greek or Latin texts;
- independently apply knowledge and skills to provide solutions to sophisticated questions about an ancient language;
- analyse complex, unpredictable texts using an appropriate metalanguage to complete a range of activities;
- apply and transmit specialist information about the style of particular authors, the requirements of the genre and historical and literary context of the text; and
- demonstrate broad technical and theoretical knowledge of an ancient language as well as specialist knowledge about a particular author/authors.
