Unit information
Did your degree in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences prompt a burning question for independent research? If so, study in honours will provide a ‘capstone’ to your formal education in a discipline, with the opportunity to drill deeper into a specialised area. You will extend your intellectual range and sharpen your research capabilities through both specialised study of a discipline and the opportunity to produce an extended research project.
You will study discipline specific content and undertake a different assessment stream based on your discipline or interdisciplinary study, while developing communication and interdisciplinary skills as a member of the wider community of scholars in honours study in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
The program will provide you with a solid foundation for postgraduate study or a professional career.

Honours candidates only.
Eligible students may undertake Honours in one of three assessment streams.
The assessment pattern will usually reflect that used by the discipline that formed the basis of the student's admission to honours. Where interdisciplinary honours study is undertaken, the assessment pattern will be that agreed by the supervisory team and Unit Coordinator as most appropriate for the project of study.
Arts and Humanities Disciplines: Ancient History, Chinese, Classical Languages (Greek and Latin), English, French, German, History, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Media and Communications, Music, Philosophy, Political and International Studies, Spanish, Studies in Religion, Theatre Studies and Writing.
Social Sciences Disciplines: Criminology, Geography, Linguistics and Sociology.
Archaeology Discipline.
Student enrolment in this unit will be allocated to a Funding Cluster relevant to the chosen discipline.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- independently apply a coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying theories and concepts, as well as research principles and methods, in one or more disciplines;
- demonstrate original thinking, a high level of discipline-specific research and technical skills and the ability to write creatively and critically;
- conduct and report independent research that generates possible solutions to complex research questions in a particular discipline and position that research within the current body of discipline knowledge, demonstrating the potential to make original contributions to knowledge in that particular discipline;
- demonstrate enhanced communication proficiency within a discipline-specific context; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the social and ethical issues in relation to their particular disciplinary areas with intellectual independence and honesty.
