Unit information
Learning about the history and culture of a region is hugely beneficial for your study of the language. Many of the expressions that Spanish speakers use in regular conversation have their foundations in age-old customs and ideas about life.
This unit offers you an introduction to the main aspects of modern Hispanic history, literature, art and culture in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, with particular attention to Hispanic America.
You will study the origins and evolution of the Hispanic world and embark on an exploration that includes online access to literary, historical and anthropological readings; relevant videos and movies; music, dance, paintings, food recipes, and humour.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and analyse the origins and development of Hispanic civilisation both in the Iberian Peninsula and its later extension and further development in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the United States;
- discuss and evaluate aspects of the main cultural expressions of Hispanic societies as portrayed in art, literature, architecture, music, food and dance;
- apply theoretical concepts and extended knowledge of Hispanic cultural and social norms and Hispanic society particularly as they relate to the study of cultural encounters; and
- examine and apply critical interpretations of aspects of Hispanic culture and its varied expressions.
