Unit information
Equip yourself for roles in Australia’s multi-billion-dollar sheep and wool industries and production systems, with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in these fields.
This unit introduces you to the fundamentals of the industry and production systems, considering both the Australian industry and its relationship to global markets.
With an integrated approach that highlights the considerations that producers need to take into account, you will explore the factors affecting the production of sheep meat and wool. These include nutrition, genetics and environmental issues.
Examining some of the challenges facing the industry today, you will also learn about marketing systems and the importance of meeting consumer demands for the sustainability of the industry.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand and describe the nature, structure and size of the Australian sheep and wool industry and its products, including lamb, mutton and wool, and its relationship to world markets; and in so doing the student will demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the subject;
- identify and evaluate the challenges facing the Australian sheep and wool industry now and into the future and explain how these could be managed; and in doing so the student will also demonstrate an ability to analyse and evaluate information;
- by describing the environmental, physiological, nutritional and genetic factors affecting sheep and wool production the student will also demonstrate the ability to transmit this knowledge to others;
- identify the different methods of producing sheepmeat and wool and how these vary with location and climate; this will also show the student's ability to analyse and evaluate information; and
- outline the marketing systems for wool in Australia and describe how wool reaches the consumer; this will require the student to apply knowledge/skills of the subject.
