Unit information
Risk is a fundamental aspect of today’s crisis and emergency management environment. Its dynamic nature pushes leaders to rethink how risk is understood and addressed to improve mitigation strategies.
In this unit, you will gain an understanding of risk management concepts and examine specific risks such as natural disasters, man-made disasters and public health emergencies. You’ll explore the importance of contingency planning, including emergency response plans and implementation of mitigation measures.
Using relevant and thought-provoking case studies alongside reflection on your own experiences, you’ll analyse how risk impacts various situations and learn how to use this understanding to inform planning and preparedness activities.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced ability to cultivate a global perspective on strategic leadership, understanding how risk and Emergency Management is influenced by global trends, international organisations, transnational threats, and natural environments;
- demonstrate an advanced ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams and develop specialised leadership skills to effectively manage emergency challenges in complex, multi stakeholder environments;
- demonstrate specialised communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex Emergency Management and risk issues clearly and effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated knowledge of research methodologies relevant to the study of risk and Emergency Management, including qualitative and quantitative analysis; and
- demonstrate the specialised capacity to assess risks and vulnerabilities in Emergency Management at an expert level, including the ability to evaluate emerging threats like environmental disasters, pandemics, cyber warfare, terrorism, and climate change.
