Unit information
When you learn French you are learning more than just a language. It opens a window to a whole new world of culture. French also enhances your career options as it is one of the world’s most used languages.
Extend your knowledge of French language with this unit which follows on from French 101 and French 102. (This unit is also an entry point if you have studied French at HSC level and achieved 70%+ or those with equivalent prior knowledge).
FREN201 will focus on consolidation of grammar and development of communication skills, particularly reading and writing, at an intermediate level. Greatly expanding your vocabulary, you will increase your ability to read and write in French on a number of topics and enhance your appreciation of French and Francophone culture.
Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 275 million people speak French.

Notes
Students with existing competence in French (including HSC French Beginners) who are unsure of their current level of competence should take a placement test.
First language (French) speakers may not enrol in French language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate increasing autonomy in reading and writing skills in French;
- utilise intermediate structures and functions of the French language, in particular grammatical structures;
- demonstrate proficiency in selected French writing methodologies;
- apply extended knowledge of French cultural norms and society across a range of contexts, supported by research where appropriate; and
- use developed cognitive skills to analyse and synthesise information in written communication.
