Unit information
This unit introduces cultural heritage management in Australia. It explores core concepts, approaches, and key theoretical frameworks that underpin contemporary cultural heritage management, alongside relevant ethical, statutory, and international conventions.
Students will examine what cultural heritage is, with in depth focus on key issues in Indigenous, historic, maritime heritage in particular. It introduces common elements of cultural heritage management processes, the role of heritage professionals, and how their work informs broader decision-making at local, state, national, and international levels.
Through case studies, the unit highlights different forms of cultural heritage, the significance of stakeholder engagement, and common challenges in heritage projects. Balancing theoretical and practical learning, the unit develops both conceptual understanding and industry-relevant skills. It is suitable for students from diverse disciplines, archaeology, history, geography, planning and more.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe key methods and principles underpinning cultural heritage management in Australia and internationally;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ethical, statutory and legislative contexts of cultural heritage management in Australia;
- identify and explain major categories of cultural significance and how these are evidenced at a range of cultural heritage places in Australia;
- critically analyse the processes and outcomes of a cultural heritage management project, and reflect on the outcomes from the perspectives of major stakeholders; and
- demonstrate a capacity to produce high quality written work describing and analysing key issues and processes in cultural heritage management.
