Unit information
Mental health practitioners draw upon a range of tools to provide high quality, effective interventions for their clients. This unit introduces you to the evidence-based, focused psychological and pharmacological strategies used in the provision of mental health services.
Emphasising the theoretical underpinnings of practice and the effectiveness of evidence-based psychological interventions, you will explore current techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, motivational interviewing, psychopharmacology and psychoeducation.
Using real-world or simulated case studies, you will have opportunities to evaluate the use of these interventions, examining the complex interaction of physical, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual factors.
This unit will help you to build a foundation of knowledge to support mental health recovery and wellbeing as a beginner mental health clinician.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- communicate knowledge of the effectiveness of evidence-based treatment approaches such as cognitive-behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing to mental health recovery and well being;
- critically analyse the theoretical underpinnings, practice and effectiveness of specific focused psychological strategies;
- critically evaluate the use of evidence-based interventions to actual or simulated case studies, taking into account the complex physical, psychological, social, cultural and spirituals needs of clients; and
- utilise advanced critical reflection skills to enhance clinical practice in mental health.
