Unit information
In an era of rapid change in industry, professionals equipped with the skills and knowledge to implement best practice feedlot management techniques for intensive ruminant production industries are in demand.
Exploring the latest research and commercial insights in the field, this unit will introduce you to the primary aspects of feed yard management.
These include core management principles, quality assurance, shipping and receiving cattle, handling and processing feedlot cattle, feedlot waste management practices and animal welfare.
This unit has been developed and is delivered by industry-recognised consultants and expert research personnel.
We aim to provide you with an overview of leading management practices, extending your capacity to adapt and respond to the challenges you may encounter in the field.

| TBA | TBA | 3 days | Mandatory Intensive School | All offerings | The Intensive School is mandatory for all online students. The Intensive School involves a 3-day mandatory field trip to the Darling Downs in Queensland. No activities will take place at the UNE Armidale campus. Students have the option to join the trip in Toowoomba on the first day of the field trip, however for those joining in Armidale, the field trip will depart one-day prior (being Sunday 2nd Aug, 2026) to the start of the mandatory attendance dates. The off-campus Intensive School may incur additional expenses, for further information please contact the unit coordinator. In addition, students will be responsible for all meals. |

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- analyse, evaluate and transform information in order to demonstrate an understanding of the key issues surrounding growth pathways, genetic selection, animal health and nutrition management and meat quality implications for grain-fed ruminant animals;
- demonstrate knowledge of the social and environmental issues pertaining to the design and management of intensively housed ruminant animals, including animal welfare and waste management; and
- demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the specific discipline and analyse, evaluate and transmit knowledge pertaining to how biological concepts can be used to explain backgrounding protocols, induction protocols, ration manipulation and animal health recording practices.

There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology.
