Unit information
This unit employs ‘Extensive Reading’ methodology. You will read large volumes of Japanese text matched to your individual proficiency level in order to acquire and consolidate level-appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Socio-cultural knowledge and awareness are also enhanced via the thematic content of the texts. The readings/stories provided include both fiction and non-fiction and most have accompanying audio and illustrations. You will answer comprehension questions and provide written reflective comments (in Japanese) on the completion of each reading/story.
This unit is an elective that aims to bolster your reading skills and support your progress in the core Japanese language units.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- read a large volume of Japanese texts with improved comprehension skills at individual proficiency levels;
- display increased knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures in context at their individual proficiency levels;
- display improved recognition of kanji characters in context at their individual proficiency levels; and
- display increased socio-cultural knowledge and awareness.
