What is religion and how should we study it? There are many different approaches to the academic study of religion.
In this unit you will explore various disciplinary approaches to these and other questions through an investigation of such fascinating phenomena as: sacred myths and rituals; belief in the unseen and otherworldly; the problem of evil; religious persons and communities; sacred time and sacred space, as well as the very concept of the sacred itself.
You will develop your analytical skills and your communication skills as you research specific issues concerning religion and the sacred.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of theoretical, methodological and conceptual knowledge central to the religious studies discipline;
- critically review, analyse and synthesise knowledge about the academic study of religion thereby demonstrating autonomy, objectivity and reflective practice;
- apply critical and creative thinking in undertaking research; and
- formulate and communicate clear and cogent written arguments consistent with the academic study of religion.
