English in the Primary Years: Working with Literature (EDEE350)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. analyse texts for the language and multimodal resources that can be used in modelling and explicit teaching (GTSD 2.1.1);
2. demonstrate knowledge of strategies for working with age-appropriate literature to build skills in reading comprehension and fluency, and responding to texts through speaking, writing and creating (GTSD 1.3.1. 2.3.1, 2.5.1);
3. demonstrate knowledge of strategies for building knowledge about language at word, grammar and text levels (GTSD 1.3.1, 2.3.1, 2.5.1);
4. demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches, as they can be applied to the study of literature through speaking/listening, reading/viewing, and writing (GTSD 1.3.1, 5.1.1);
5. demonstrate knowledge of the principles of a scaffolded, inclusive pedagogy, and the interrelationship of the language modes, in the context of the English learning area (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1); and
6. design a teaching-learning sequence for working with literature, demonstrating understanding of strategies for building spoken language, and reading and writing skills, addressing the needs of diverse students (GTSD 1.3.1, 2.3.1, 3.2.1, 3.6.1).
