Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

In the rapidly changing world of information technology and computer science, a solid understanding of the mathematical concepts underpinning different branches of these sciences adds an invaluable dimension to your knowledge.

Discrete mathematics provides you with the foundation needed for studies in computer science and mathematics, helping you to think mathematically and use logic and reasoning to solve complex problems.

Studying this unit, you will explore the general themes of discrete mathematics: logic and proof, induction and recursion, discrete structures and graphs, as well as algorithm design and efficiency analysis.

Focusing on traditional and emerging real-world applications of the discipline, you will learn about digital logic circuits and number systems, cryptography, finding minimum spanning trees and shortest paths in graphs, analysing the efficiency of searching and sorting algorithms, and topological sorting for scheduling.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. determine the validity of logical arguments, and prove simple mathematical statements using the rules of symbolic logic and predicate calculus;
  2. apply induction and recursion to relevant problems;
  3. demonstrate a theoretical and technical understanding of graphs, and apply this knowledge to solve problems involving minimum spanning trees;
  4. demonstrate a theoretical and technical understanding of relations, and apply this knowledge to solve problems in cryptography, and topological sorting;
  5. determine the asymptotic efficiency of a given algorithm; and
  6. explain the history and status of discrete mathematics as it relates to computer science and digital technologies.

Learning resources

Textbooks are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.

Note: Students are expected to purchase prescribed material. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate Jess Trow, Bachelor of Education (K–6)

UNE’s flexibility and support made the transition smooth and helped me find a great balance between academic responsibilities and personal growth. It was the perfect place to study education while staying true to my rural roots.
