Unit information
Storytelling is a unique human behaviour that evolves alongside major shifts in technology, spanning from the printing press to radio, and from the filmed image to personal computers and smartphones.
This unit explores advanced concepts in narrative theory, investigating how storytelling practices have diversified in the digital age. You will examine current issues in narratology and scholarly approaches to storytelling, and critically appraise debates that circulate new media such as podcasts, fanfictions, videogames, digital poetry, memes, and multimodal narratives. From this foundation, you will analyse the integration of these forms with more traditional methods of writing and storytelling, such as screenwriting, writing for performance and the private journal. This unit offers opportunities to experiment with advanced digital technologies and their creative storytelling uses, as well as reflect on the utility of digital tools such as artificial intelligence in creative practice.
Engage with the cultural significance of digital stories and the ethical aspects of constructing narratives using digital media in a variety of contexts, applying insights from your independent research to the development of your own creative work.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge across current and emerging trends in digital storytelling;
- critically reflect on legal, social, ethical, epistemological, and ontological issues in digital storytelling;
- analyse digital stories across a variety of media;
- develop and apply skills to produce a creative work using digital storytelling tools; and
- generate and communicate solutions to problems associated with digital storytelling.
