Unit information
In this unit, you will explore how the wave of 2022 cyberattacks in Australia compelled leaders to note the vulnerability of Australian customers accessing services in a cyber-connected market. You’ll examine emerging criminal tactics like ransomware, and compare traditional prevention and investigation techniques against constantly evolving global threats.
Throughout the unit, you will delve into key cybersecurity concepts and principles, analysing different types of attacks and the shifting threat landscape. You’ll also consider the importance of using vulnerability assessments, penetration testing and incident response planning — as well as where responsibility lies for these critical actions.
Finally, you’ll investigate the role of interagency cooperation and collaboration in prevention and investigation, including partnerships between government, the private sector and the international community, to gain a comprehensive view of modern cybersecurity.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of industry standard cybersecurity frameworks and their application in developing robust security programmes;
- demonstrate specialised collaboration and communication skills, particularly in cross functional teams, to effectively address cybersecurity challenges and convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders;
- demonstrate an expert understanding of the legal, regulatory, and ethical issues related to cyber security, including data privacy laws, compliance requirements, and ethical hacking practices;
- analyse and execute incident response plans at an advanced level, effectively managing cybersecurity incidents and minimising their impact on the organisational operations; and
- demonstrate specialised skills in critical analysis and synthesis of theory and practice in cybercrime prevention.
