Unit information
This core unit provides an overview of emergency and crisis management, focusing on key concepts in policies and procedures as well as recognised best practice.
You’ll explore current trends and emerging issues in the field, including the increasing threat of natural disasters, cyberattacks and other disruptions. The unit emphasises the importance of communication and collaboration between government, emergency agencies and the private sector in emergency management and crisis response.
You’ll examine case studies and real-world examples of emergency and crisis response efforts – both successful and failed – to highlight key lessons learned. Through active participation and thoughtful and informed discussions, you will develop an advanced understanding of complex emergency situations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a specialised ability to design and implement effective risk and crises response strategies, ensuring coordination among various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector;
- demonstrate expert proficiency in conducting risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance community resilience;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the role of policy and regulatory frameworks in risk and emergency management, including the ability to analyse and apply relevant laws, guidelines, and standards;
- apply expert skills in crisis communication and information management, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of information to the public and relevant authorities during emergencies;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the ethical and legal dimensions of risk and emergency management, including issues related to human rights, resource allocation, and the protection of vulnerable populations; and
- demonstrate an expert capacity to integrate innovative technologies and methodologies, such as data analytics, AI, and social media, into Risk and Emergency Management practices and research.
