Cognitive Psychology (PSYC206)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the history and philosophy underpinning the science of cognitive psychology and the social, cultural, historical and professional influences on the practice of psychology and psychopathology, with the ability to communicate this effectively to others;
2. demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and skills of cognitive psychology as a science, including research methods, culturally appropriate psychological assessment and measurement, and individual differences;
3. identify and examine each of the major areas studied in cognitive psychology. These include the biological/neuroscientific bases of perception, attention, memory, language, reasoning and consciousness;
4. analyse and evaluate the means by which empirical information is collected to test cognitive psychology theories;
5. model the skills required for data collection, analysis and the writing up, in appropriate APA style, of an empirical report that contribute to life-long application in a professional career;
6. critically evaluate the link between theoretical models and practical issues in cognitive psychology; and
7. demonstrate teamwork and interpersonal skills in finding and critiquing assessment references.
