Unit information
Gain experience with the diversity of client problems encountered in clinical practice, applying a variety of different clinical skills (assessment, treatment and professional) with this placement unit.
If you currently hold General Registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (MPsych(Clin) rule c) and wish to broaden your scope to include clinical practice, this placement offers opportunities for exposure to a range of professional experiences under the supervision of a clinical psychologist.
With at least 46 days (350 hours) of supervised practice external to the University, the placement must include 150 hours of client contact time and a minimum of one hour of supervision per 7.5 placement hours.
Completion of two case studies, written in a style suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, will also help you to extend your skills in research, analysis and communication.
You must successfully complete this placement before commencing further placements.

Enrolment rules
Notes
Students must be enrolled in the MPsyc(Clin) under Rule (c) and hold General Registration as a Psychologist at the time of enrolment in this unit .
Students' General Registration without Conditions with the Psychology Board of Australia will be re-confirmed by the School prior to enrolment in this unit being approved.
Students in this unit are responsible for identifying a worksite for their placement, which meets the supervision and experience requirements of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.
Students must be compliant with all mandatory documentation requirements for the duration of their enrolment in a post-graduate professional psychology program.
In addition to the above, students are required to submit the following prior to enrolling in a placement unit:
- National Police Check
- Working with Children Check
- Confidentiality Agreement
- Student Declaration
- Evidence of vaccination as required by NSW Health for Psychologists
Students whose mandatory documentation is not current/valid will not be permitted to enrol in a placement unit and will be withdrawn from a placement unit prior to census day.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- competently conduct a clinical interview and demonstrate facility in the assessment of common psychological disorders using culturally appropriate methods;
- apply theories of the causes of psychological disorders to develop a case formulation of a presenting problem;
- deliver an intervention in a culturally responsive manner for a common psychological disorder;
- demonstrate an understanding of the roles of other professionals and be able to liaise effectively with other professionals where appropriate;
- engage in self-reflective practice and monitor ongoing progress towards treatment goals;
- write a case study report suitable for publication in a scientific journal including a literature review of current practice and the underlying theoretical and empirical bases for assessment and intervention, evaluation of the outcomes of assessment and treatment, and a discussion of the implications for practice; and
- demonstrate application of ethical principles and professional issues underlying psychological practice.
