Unit information
Effective psychological treatment is guided by the use of a range of structured assessment tools in order to reach a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan for your clients.
This unit equips you with the knowledge and applied skills needed to systematically assess, measure and evaluate a variety of psychological issues presenting in adulthood.
Focusing on culturally appropriate approaches, you will explore the theoretical, conceptual and practical aspects of assessments.
You will also examine and hone your skills using a range of assessment strategies, including interviewing, observation and psychological testing.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically evaluate the psychometric properties of a psychological test and be aware of test limitations;
- conduct a comprehensive psychological assessment of an adult, which includes interprofessional liaison and collateral reports as appropriate;
- use assessment procedures that are necessary, sufficient and culturally responsive to answer a referral question;
- administer, score and interpret the findings of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, a test of adult personality, the Wechsler Memory Scale - IV and other psychological tests;
- observe, analyse and understand behaviour from a functional analytic perspective; and
- write a valid, succinct and well-organised psychological assessment report to communicate findings using respectful and culturally appropriate language.
