Unit information
Providing psychological care to children and young adults requires you to have an appreciation of the complex interplay of family, cultural and environmental factors that can affect presentation.
Studying this unit, you will be equipped with invaluable clinical skills and knowledge, learning to use a range of tools to assess and treat children and adolescents.
Focusing on common psychological disorders, and the many factors influencing their development and presentation, you will gain skills in behavioural, psychometric and clinical assessment, and intervention.
The unit offers opportunities to extend your knowledge, equipping you to provide evidence-based, culturally appropriate treatment for a variety of disorders, including internalising and externalising problems and developmental disorders.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply skills in conceptualising presentations in children and adolescents, and demonstrate the ability to articulate an appropriate treatment strategy to other professionals;
- develop a case formulation that reflects the complex interplay between the child, family, environmental and cultural contexts in the presentation of disorders;
- demonstrate awareness of evidence-based culturally appropriate treatment for the most common disorders in children and adolescents that present for psychological assistance;
- interpret the findings of a standard test of intelligence and adaptive functioning in children; and
- write a valid, useful and well-supported psychological assessment report relevant to children and adolescents.
