This unit is designed to build on previously established foundations of Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin).

Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner.

Attention is given both to the structures and patterns of the language, and also to its socio-cultural context, and you will be introduced to various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society through studying spoken and written language texts.

Notes

HSC study of Chinese at Continuers level, or equivalent, will be accepted as qualifying students for entry into CHIN201.

First language (Chinese) speakers may not enrol in Chinese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.

Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

utilise intermediate structures and functions of the Chinese language in a variety of everyday contexts;
demonstrate understanding of Chinese language and the use of forms and expressions in colloquial interaction at an intermediate level;
communicate with increased autonomy in Chinese with some depth on selected topics of everyday life through the composition of spoken and handwritten text; and
apply extended knowledge of Chinese language, culture and society through the analysis and interpretation of language use in social contexts, using research to support understanding where appropriate.
